Fashion in India

It's as though I landed on "What not to Wear" but without the embarrassing part of everyone seeing my old wardrobe, or the part of being told what I should buy to flatter my particular body shape. Okay, I didn't get a $5000 Visa, either. But I have pretty much bought a new wardrobe! As planned, I really didn't bring much from home. And with this heat and humidity, everything I wear has to be washed after one day, so there was some urgency, besides the fact that next week I start working full days in the office.

In India, there are really only two main options for women's clothing: saree or salwar kameez. The latter is a long tunic over loose, pajama-like pants. It's extremely comfortable, and way easier to put on than a saree (or sari). I wear a size large--these are small people over here--so it's just a matter of the color, fabric type, and decoration. I think I've bought seven ready-made already, and beautiful material to have another made by a roadside tailor.
Well, of course, you just need to see for yourself.

So, you are still able to stick with your colors!! I thought you said you got a SHORT haircut before you left; I pictured it much shorter in my mind. It still looks as thought you might be hot in that humidity, hope not.

That material looks beautiful! Is it permanent press?????

Deborah said she took over 6 months of growth off my hair. It had gotten quite long. I haven't taken a comb, brush, or dryer to my hair since the plane landed. Maybe you could tell. :-)

Actually, the word hot does not quite describe it. How about permanently glistening?

The next best thing to permanent press (Would that help in a place that doesn't have dryers, anyway?) may be street ironers. They seem to use hot coals in huge metal irons, but I understand that they do good work. Next week I'll probably find out for myself.

I love your new beautiful clothes! When I was talking to my friend that I told you about, it occurred to me that I could get some Indian outfits through her, so I asked her to pick some up for me. It should be interesting to see what she ends up getting.

Oh, aren't you just the prettiest thing? I love the colors; it is so you! So, is this your work clothes? And, maybe "Sunday go to meetin'" clothes also?

Well, I am certainly going to be out here enjoying your blogs. This is a good idea. Love to hear of your adventures.

Street ironers - ??? Are they actually on the street? : )

Hi, Barb. Yes, you see them right along the side of the road. I'll have to try to get a picture at some point.

Oh, and these are the clothes, along with sarees, that the woman wear all the time! Yes, I mean even those working construction jobs, which is something I've seen women doing. The mother of my hostess even wears sarees at night; it's just the way she was raised.

Over the weekend, while we were all tourists, two of the younger girls from the office did wear western clothing, while I was dressed in Indian clothing! Alain said it's the first time he's seen them in western clothing, and he's been here most of a year.
